The cause of concern today is the rising share of unemployment across the country in 2019, by educational qualification. As per the study done by Azim Premji University (www.statista.com), 14.2 percent students are unemployed across India in 2019. This is a cause of concern because students with higher qualifications are not able to get the right jobs as they are not found to be skill ready in industries and markets.

The expectations of Indian youth are also changing and they are not able to get the right jobs as per their qualifications. Most engineering and management graduates are increasingly hired for multifarious job roles which are not in consonance with their core competencies.
But new technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Virtual Intelligence, Robotics, Digital Marketing etc., will make many jobs redundant. We therefore have to change the patterns as well as the pedagogy of teaching as rote learning will not take us anywhere. We have to change the subjects, contents as well as the delivery pattern, so that the students are skilled enough to take challenges and are able to take decisions instantly in a competitive industry where market dynamics are changing fast and we have to acclimatize ourselves and take the risks based on the challenges for better results. This is more required in engineering and management institutions where the faculty have to be trained to inculcate a learning approach through experiential learning. Rote learning has to phase out and critical thinking through projects and industry trainings have to be inculcated among students for enhancing their exposure.
Today, majority of the engineering graduates who pass from various institutions are unemployable as they lack in skills like creative thinking, problem solving, learnability, human-centered design, collaboration and customer- centricity which are all required for the new generation jobs.
Most of the management institutes in the country lack in infrastructure and have poor quality of faculty. The students are therefore exposed more towards rote learning and are not able to make their students skillful or job-ready. They lack in problem solving and creative thinking and are therefore not accepted in industry for managerial openings.
So, in these conditions the task ahead for all the stake holders (the government, industry and institutions) is to enhance experiential learning to make these graduates job ready.
TASKS FOR THE GOVERNMENT
• Should make all the stakeholders (students and institutes) aware of the skilling initiatives done by the central and state administrations and make it more effective.
• Should provide incentives to corporates for providing the students more internships and training programs in advanced technologies.
• Collaborating with the academia and industry to wide base the curriculum and skilling them based on the demands of the industry and also make it more effective.
TASKS FOR THE INDUSTRY
• Reskilling the workforce to meet the changing requirement of the industry.
• Collaborating with colleges and training centers to skill the students and make them job-ready.
TASKS FOR THE ACADEMIA
• Updating the curriculum regularly, based on the requirements of the industry and collaborating with the industry experts and the government to make the students more skillful and job-ready.
• Enhancing the infrastructural facilities such as laboratories, research centers, faculties and imparting hands-on knowledge both on theoretical as well as practical aspects to make learning more experiential.
• Appointing new faculty and give them incentives to undertake projects and research which may enhance their knowledge and make them experts in their field. This will help them to enhance their capability and they will be able to train their students based on the changing trends in the industry.
•Industry academia interface should also be enhanced and a collaboration should be developed between the academia and industry through industrial visits, internships and guest lectures by industry experts.
• Inculcating an attitude of continuous learning and unlearning in students by making them more adaptable to the changing work environment and also motivate them further to pursue the course and /or career of which they are passionate about.
